Can you replace just one panel on your garage door?

Can you replace just one panel on your garage door?

Yes, no, maybe - let’s break it down the Garage Hub way

We get this question all the time, usually right after someone’s had a bit of a mishap. Maybe the teenager misjudged reverse. Maybe the wheelie bin had a go. Maybe someone (definitely not you) nudged the panel during a very slow parking attempt.

Whatever the reason, you’re now staring at one wonky panel and wondering: Can we just replace that bit... or is the whole door cactus?

Let’s dive in.

The short answer: it depends

Yep, the classic tradie answer. But hear us out. Sometimes you can replace a single panel. Other times, it’s not worth it, not safe, or just not going to look right. Let’s unpack it like a dodgy Bunnings flat-pack.

When you can replace just one panel

  • It’s a sectional door: If your door has horizontal panels that join together, replacing one of them is often possible. They’re designed to be swapped out (kind of like LEGO  but heavier and less fun to step on).
  • The damage is localised: If only one panel is bent, cracked, or dented and the rest of the door is in great nick, we might be able to pop a new one in without drama.
  • We can match the panel: If the manufacturer still exists and hasn’t changed the design in the last 37 years, we’ve got a shot. If it’s a current model, replacing a panel can be quick, clean and budget-friendly.

When it’s probably not worth it

  • The door is old: If your garage door’s been around since the last time mullets were fashionable (the first time), chances are we won’t find a matching panel unless we go time travelling.
  • The damage affects the frame or more than one panel: Sometimes a bump that looks small actually tweaks the tracks or throws off alignment. Replacing one bit won’t fix the bigger problem.
  • The colour has faded: Even if we find a perfect match, your existing panels might have faded from years of sun and storms. New panel + old panels = garage door patchwork quilt.

 When it’s a solid “maybe”

  • It’s a tilt door or roller door: Bad news, these don’t have separate panels. So technically no, you can’t replace just one bit. But depending on the damage, there might still be a clever fix.
  • Custom doors: Some high-end or custom doors are... let’s say, special. In a good way. But also in a ‘that’ll take some tracking down’ way.

So, what should you do?

Easy - call Garage Hub.

And don’t worry, we’ve seen worse. Way worse.
